A Study on the Health Status and Life Satisfaction of the Elderly


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to produce basic data to be used in planning nursing care to improve health status and life satisfaction of the elderly. The subjects were 200 individuals of 65 years of age and over, living in K city. The data were collected by questionnaires during the period from November 21, 1994 to January 12, 1995. The instruments used for this study were Modified Cornell Medical Index and Life Satisfaction Scale.
Analysis of data was done by the SPSS computer program for ANOVA, T-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of this study were as follows
1. The score of physical problem complaints of the elderly was M=13.3200, S.D=5.4926. The score of life satisfaction of the elderly was M=37.8650, S.D=10.5795.
2. There were significant differences in health status according to sex(p<0.05), marital status (p<0.00 1), the level of education(p<0.001), pocket money(p<0.01), the satisfaction for income(p<0.05), the state of family living together(p<0.05), the satisfaction for children¢¥s respect(p<0.05).
3. There were significant differences in life satisfaction according to marital status(p<0.001), the level of good relation with spouse(p<0.01), the level of education(p<0.01), the satisfaction for housing(p<0.001), pocket money(p<0.001), the amount of income(P<0.001), the satisfaction for income (p<0.001), the state of family living together(P<0.001), the satisfaction for children¢¥s respect (P<0.001), whether they participating in family decision or not(p<0.001), whether they participating in regular meetings or not(p<0.001), whether they have hobby or not(p<0.05).
4. There was significantly negative correlation between physical complaints score and life satisfaction score(r=-0.4871, p<0.001). Therefore the hypothesis that "the higher the level of health status, the higher the level of life satisfaction" was accepted.
